A 1997 first-class trip to Chateau Marmont became the starting point for a lifelong hotel stationery archive.

It is 1997. I have never flown first class. I have never been to Los Angeles. Disney flies me down because they want to pitch turning Geek Squad into a movie, a Revenge of the Nerds meets Ghostbusters concept that never happens because no one can quite explain why it should. They put me at the Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard in its faux French castle perch. It opened in 1929 as luxury apartments, built to survive earthquakes, then evolved into a hotel synonymous with privacy and bad decisions made quietly. This is also where John Belushi died in 1982, which gives the place an extra layer of Hollywood gravity, and it has been mythologized on film, including Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere.

The first thing I notice is not the bed, the minibar, or the view. It is a leather binder on the table, like a small altar. Inside is exquisite stationery. The type matches the building, simple and elegant, like it was designed to age well. The rendering of the Chateau feels engraved, or meant to look engraved. It signals permanence and says: write something that matters.

This one still blows my mind: a letter from Andre Balazs asking for comments on your stay, with an envelope addressed back to him. It is not a generic tell-us-how-we-did card. It is the owner putting his name on it. Balazs bought and restored the Chateau in 1990, and the whole gesture feels like that era’s version of founder mode. Also, the postage: a 34 cent first-class stamp, and someone hand-noted the extra 1 cent so the envelope could be reused without wasting it. Tiny discipline, hiding in plain sight.

A clean sheet of letterhead. Big margins. Room at the top for lyrics, contracts, and confessions. The contact line matters: Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, California, and Facsimile. That single word is a date stamp. This sits in the 1980s to 1990s, when fax numbers were still a promise, not a museum exhibit.

The note card: Chateau Marmont and nothing else. Elegant and restrained. They give it to the guest, not just the staff. The card stock is a medium-dark gray laid sheet with that subtle currency texture from the wire. It feels expensive in a way that has nothing to do with thickness and everything to do with intention.

The watermark shot, held up to a lamp. Classic Strathmore. A watermark is the stationery equivalent of a velvet rope. Not loud, not flashy, just quietly stating that the paper has lineage.

A closer look again at the Balazs letter, then the fax cover sheet. Facsimile cover sheet is printed right on it like a ceremonial title. Hotels do not do this anymore because nobody needs it, and because nobody wants to pay for objects that teach you how to be attentive.

The note card with the envelope is a complete kit. This is the hotel saying: take a piece of us with you, and maybe send something into the world that does not disappear instantly.

At some point, Charlie Watts told me he had drawn every hotel bed he had slept in since 1968. That was the first time I understood hotels as archives, not just rooms. This stationery is my version of that notebook: a portable souvenir that still expects you to do something with it.

This is the piece that still surprises me: a direct guest-feedback letter signed by Andre Balazs. It invites comments and makes customer listening feel personal, not procedural.

The final image shows the feedback letter with its addressed return envelope to New York, complete with 34-cent stamps and a one-cent add-on. That tiny postal detail captures the era perfectly.
